Exploring the Emerald Isle

Whether you’re traveling to Ireland just for the wedding (thank you endlessly) or planning to extend your trip, check out a few of these day-long excursions to get your trip started and make the most of visiting this beautiful country.

Glendalough

Located about an hour and 45 minutes south of Dublin, Glendalough is home to some of Ireland’s characteristic natural beauty. Explore the ancient ruins of the 6th century Glendalough Monastic Site, take in stunning views on the Spinc Loop Hike, or enjoy time by the Upper Lake and nearby Poulanass Waterfall. Glendalough is highly recommended for those ready to embrace the Irish outdoors.

Wicklow

Also located about an hour and 40 minutes southeast of Dublin is the coastal town of Wicklow. Wicklow is home to incredible natural beauty, as well as a picturesque town full of harborside sites, shopping, and restaurants. Check out the Powerscourt Estate and gardens, named the third best garden in the world. Take in the impressive art collection at Russborough House or simply enjoy some time by the sea with a pint.

Kilkenny

A 2 hour drive south of Dublin lands you in the historic city of Kilkenny. It’s cobbled streets and medieval charm make Kilkenny a popular spot to take in a bit of Irish history and culture. Kilkenny Castle’s grounds and galleries offer visitors tons to explore. Stroll down the medieval mile, dotted with museums and historic sites to immerse yourself in Irish history. Looking for a different kind of historical experience? Head over to the Smithwick’s Experience to explore 300 years of brewing history. The experience ends with an obligatory pint.

County Cork

About 3.5 hours’ drive from Dublin, Country Cork is a great spot for those looking to spend a little extra time exploring Ireland before or after the wedding. County Cork is home to stunning landscapes and rich culture. Start your adventure in Cork City, where you can explore the quirky English Market for some local bites, then stroll along the River Lee. Don’t miss a trip to the picturesque town of Kinsale, known for its colorful buildings and seafood. For nature lovers, the rugged beauty of the Beara Peninsula is a must; hike the coastal trails take in amazing views. And of course, a visit to Blarney Castle to kiss the famous Blarney Stone rounds out a trip to County Cork.

Cliffs of Moher and Galway

As we heard from locals, “Galway’s class”. Located on Ireland’s West Coast, this beautiful city is located about 2.5 hours away from Dublin’s city center. Enjoy a stroll through the colorful streets, where you can check out local shops, café’s and pubs. The famous Latin Quarter is perfect for soaking in the lively atmosphere and maybe catching some street performers. For a taste of local history, head to the Galway Cathedral or the historic Spanish Arch. If you’re up for an adventure, take a day trip to the breathtaking Cliffs of Moher—just an hour away—and be sure to snap some epic photos. And of course, finish off your day with live traditional music in one of the many pubs Galway is famous for!
