For The Whiskey Lovers (& Haters)
The word “whiskey” comes from the Irish uisce beatha, meaning water of life, only underscoring the importance and pride the Irish people place on the drink. The distillation of Irish Whiskey stretches back hundreds of years, having been refined into the spirit now famous around the world.
Just outside of Trinity College Dublin is the Irish Whiskey Museum. While we were unable to visit ourselves, you may find this to be a worthwhile stop to get a full history and appreciation for Irish Whiskey. To find out more, click here.
Ready to head straight to the source? Stop by the Jameson Distillery and choose from a variety of experiences, including the Bow Street Experience that we had the chance to join. It starts with the daily grog – the reward for a day’s work for every Jameson Distillery worker back in the day. You now have the choice between a Jameson Original or a whiskey-based cocktail to get the tour started. The tour takes you through the history of the famed distiller and allows you to touch, smell, and taste the ingredients that make the world-famous whiskey. You’ll also have the opportunity to sample and purchase whiskeys you can’t find back home. As inexperienced whiskey drinkers ourselves, we still found the tour to be an awesome experience!
Looking for more of the Water of Life? Head to the Horseshoe Bar at the Shelbourne Hotel. The friendly bar staff (shout out to Michael) can share their impressive knowledge of Irish Whiskey and make recommendations on your tastes and preferences. We had one of the best old-fashioneds to date! The bar is also fully equipped to make any of your favorites while enjoying the hotel’s impossibly cool and sophisticated vibes.
